Student-Teacher Relation – Best Answer (2nd)

Posted on 30 June 2010 by Lavanya Shekhar

I am reminded of an article I read from Buddha some time back about the 2 extremes of a Teacher. “Me teacher — You student. You do, think and act exactly as I command if you want to learn or be anything.” The other extreme: “There are no teachers and no students for we are all teachers, and we are all students. One person is not above another and everyone’s words have equal value.”
I personally feel teachers are very much adapting to the 2nd extreme. They give enough space and freedom to their students. Students want to be treated like buddies…Teachers should be a mentor and not a person who dictates stuff to the students. Classroom environment should be pleasant and student should indulge the time in a productive way.
These days Children carry their teacher’s phone number and communicate to them when needed. Parents also call the teacher and discusses with the teacher about their ward. During my school days, I was so scared to talk to my teacher. Even to clarify some doubt, I was not ready to go to the teacher. And during the PTM, I never allowed my mom to talk to my teacher at length. But, these days, children want their parents to meet their teacher. They are happy to recite the episodes that happen in school at home too.
Student Teacher relationship should be amiable. Teacher should never feel its a burden to teach a child and even the student never take it for granted that the teacher is being paid to do her job. Pay alone can’t be a reason for a teacher to work in a School. He/she surely has the feel for teaching, desire /passion for teaching and hence she is leaving her family behind to teach students. Teacher should be dedicated and treat the students as her own child. Only then, a teacher can bring about a change in the child’s life. If you work, if you are spending 7 hours with your student, I sincerely feel, teacher should devote, dedicate, and surrender herself completely to her children and teaching. If one can’t do that, then its better to quit. We are dealing with life, life of many children. Real life. Whatever teacher does in a classroom is going to affect children either positively or negatively. Children are no longer going to sit there and listen to what the teachers say…Classroom discussions are no longer monologue. It is a 2 way communication happening in every classroom these days. Children want to learn and teachers need to help them to learn, be there and support them, motivate them…Every morning when you see your student, address them by their name and that’s it….He will share a very good relationship with you…Sometimes I feel teachers don’t take pains to find out the names of her students. That really makes a difference. Call your student by their name and they are bound to become your fans and take you as their role model.
Not sure whether I have hit the topic or not…Felt like sharing my thoughts on this….thx for reading though :-)

“Child is never born with an empty mind”

Posted on 23 June 2010 by Lavanya Shekhar

I appreciate Dr. Maria Montessori’s system of education. Child is never born with an empty mind. All children have inherent inner directives from nature that guides their true normal development. Teacher plays a very important role in the life of a child. She is to watch over the environment to remove any obstacles that would interfere in the normal development of the child. She has to show the right path to the children and be a guiding source. You can’t say it is wrong without explaining the consequences of the situation. Educate the child and broaden his thinking process. Keep charging his mind with information because child is always inquisitive to learn and to know. Don’t ignore them when they want to learn.
Give them the opportunity to exhibit their talents. Encourage creativity, motivate them with rewards, give them the freedom to work the way they want it, allow them to be independent. Don’t dictate things to them. Don’t be a Hitler. Tell them your expectation and allow them to work on it instead of spoon feeding. Talk to your child. More you talk more information sharing happens. Show him the way and let him take the path. Give him ideas and discuss with him and ready to accept what he wants also instead of thrusting tasks upon him. Allow the child to be innovative. Lastly, be your kid’s friend and listen to him…just listen, that will really help…It adds to the child’s overall development.
